Kettlebell vs Dumbbell vs Barbell vs Clubbell: Which One Is Better?
If you’ve ever walked into a gym (or Bellbar) and wondered which tool is best, you’re not alone.
Kettlebells. Dumbbells. Barbells. Clubbells.
Each one has a loyal following. Each one promises results.
So… which one should you use?
Let’s break it down.
Kettlebells
Kettlebells are dynamic and versatile.
Because of their offset center of mass, they challenge your stability, coordination, and grip in ways that feel very real-world. Think swings, cleans, snatches, carries.
Why I love them:
- Full-body training in one movement (hello Turkish Get Ups)
- Builds power, endurance, and strength
- Keeps things fun & interesting..depending on what you consider fun ;)
Watch out for:
- Technique matters (a lot)
- Definitely comes with a learning curve
Dumbbells
Dumbbells are the most approachable and familiar tool for most people.
They’re simple, effective, and incredibly versatile—perfect for both beginners and advanced lifters.
Why people love them:
- Easy to learn
- Great for building muscle and control
- Allows for balanced, unilateral work
Watch out for:
- Can be limiting for heavier strength work
- Less “flow” compared to kettlebells or clubbells
Barbells
Barbells are the king of maximal strength.
If your goal is to get really strong, barbells make it easier to progressively load weight and track progress.
Why people love them:
- Ideal for building raw strength
- Clear progression (add more weight)
- Efficient for big compound lifts (squats & deadlifts)
Watch out for:
- Can feel intimidating
- Requires setup, space, and good form
- Less forgiving if technique slips
Clubbells
Clubbells are the underrated gem for sure!
They emphasize rotational strength, joint health, and fluid movement—things most traditional strength training overlooks.
Why I love them:
- Incredible for shoulder health and mobility
- Builds strength through rotation and control
- Feels more like movement practice than “lifting”
Watch out for:
- Less common (not every gym has them)
- Takes time to learn the flow - another learning curve here
So… Which One Is Better?
Here’s the truth:
None of them. And all of them.
They are all just tools.
The “best” tool isn’t the one with the most science behind it.
It’s the one you’ll actually use.
The Real Question You Should Be Asking
Instead of:
“Which one is better?”
Ask yourself:
- Which one makes me feel good in my body?
- Which one do I look forward to using?
- Which one keeps me coming back consistently?
Because here’s what actually matters:
Consistency trumps intensity. Every single time.
You can have the “perfect” program, the “best” tool, the most optimized plan…
…but if you’re not excited to show up and do it?
It won’t work.
Final Takeaway
If kettlebells make you feel powerful—use them.
If barbells make you feel strong—load them up.
If dumbbells feel approachable—grab them.
If clubbells make your body move better—FLOW today.
There’s no gold medal for choosing the “right” tool.
There is a reward for showing up, putting in the work, and building strength over time.
At the end of the day, the best tool is the one that gets you in the gym…
and keeps you there.
Happy Training!
